Savion Medaleion recently arrived in New Orleans from her hometown of Haifa, Israel to serve as our Shalicha - to enrich our community through her participation in Israeli cultural events, Jewish community events and interfaith discussions throughout our area.
Savion has wanted to be a Shalicha for several years, as she has a major interest in sharing her love of Israel and Judaism with others.
"When I heard about New Orleans," she said, "it just felt like the right place to be."
Despite arriving only two weeks ago from Israel, Savion has already mapped out a gameplan for her year in the Crescent City. Her hope is to bring awareness of the wonderfully unique characteristics of Israel, and to enhance our own connections with Israel.
When asked what one thing she's most excited to do while she's here, Savion was stumped.
"From a work standpoint, I want to work with all ages," she said. I'd like to get more people to come to the existing programs in the community and boost awareness of the offerings available. But I also want to get very involved in Young Judaea, and I hope to teach Hebrew to anyone willing to learn and to organize events and lectures about Israel."
From a more personal standpoint, our Shalicha is excited to travel around the southeastern United States over the next year. She's been amazed at the warm hospitality of the region.
Most importantly, she's impressed by the Greater New Orleans Jewish community.
"Watching the recovery of New Orleans is great," she enthused. "People here truly love this city."
